Meleah: Oh, you just made me realize there’s much about you I do not know. Death of a parent brings out such contradictory emotions. At first I put my father on a pedestal, focusing solely on his good qualities. Over time, I began to realize it was the bad habits and traits that led to his demise. Finally, I realize we all are a mix of good and bad. We need to focus on our legacy, especially if we have children. I’m all-at-once sad and relieved that he is gone. In the end, I use his passing as a life lesson: What not to do.

For some reason I wasn’t too interested in this book myself as a child, probably because of being put-off by anything my younger self perceived as scary or related to monsters. But I luckily have re-discovered it as the gem of children’s literature it is through my two year old son (who, incidentally, loves all things monster related or anything that roars!)

I wish I could say that I mourn my father, but I can’t miss a dad I never knew. In a way, I envy you your grief.

Mary: Rumpus! I know. My dad used to say: What’s the rumpus? when we were making too much noise/knocking things around the house. I guess people used to have rumpus rooms in their homes, too.

I had such a fun time reading this to my kids for the first time a few years back, remembering it only vaguely from my childhood. The illustrations are certainly so much a part of its magic and wonder. And I love the word rumpus. RIP Maurice!
